Phlan's ruins host the first Gold Box party in Pool of Radiance, SSI's Advanced Dungeons & Dragons game set in the Forgotten Realms. A party approaches the city's cursed blocks, and combat uses the Gold Box formation rather than a single hero's slash.
SSI published that computer RPG in 1988, set in the occupation of Phlan. Gold Box party tactics, not a single hero's slash, decide the ruined blocks.
The NES version adapts that party combat. Phlan and the Gold Box rules are the source, and the cartridge is the console adaptation of the same ruined city.
