History

DMA Design's Grand Theft Auto starts as an open-city crime game on PC. The original from 1997 uses top-down streets, and the Game Boy Color cartridge is a later, much smaller adaptation, not those original cities.

Liberty City, San Andreas, and Vice City, in their early flat forms, hand missions to a thief who can abandon the car and walk. Police heat rises with the chaos, which is the loop the computer game made famous.

The color handheld builds a reduced map of its own. The PC cities, with their radio stations and several towns, are the version the name first meant.
