History

Intelligent Systems and Nintendo brought permadeath tactics to North America with Fire Emblem, the 2003 grid campaign Japan knows as The Blazing Blade. A fallen unit is gone for the rest of the story.

Lyn, Eliwood, and Hector each lead a stretch of the war. The weapon triangle of sword, lance, and axe decides a duel before the damage numbers resolve, and supports grow when allies fight side by side.

Importers already knew that permadeath from earlier Japanese Fire Emblem games. This was the first time that rule and those three lords reached a wide North American shelf.
