History

Shareware spread the first episode of DOOM far beyond store shelves after id Software released it on PC. Mars, the UAC complex, and a shotgun in a tight corridor became the picture of the game even for people who never bought a boxed copy.

That PC debut was in 1993, with imps and a cyberdemon already in the episode players passed around. The shareware slice was enough to teach the doors, the secrets, and the circle-strafing habit.

Super Nintendo and later Game Boy Advance versions are reduced conversions, not the debut. Smaller windows and cut content mean those carts are adaptations of id's PC game, not the version that spread first.
