Animated captures turn chess into a skirmish in Battle vs Chess, a 2011 game where fantasy scenes play out the moves. A knight's jump can become a short fight, and Wii and Nintendo DS versions were released around that idea.
The board still obeys chess rules. The spectacle is what happens in the square when a piece is taken, which is the whole reason to wrap a battle around a legal move.
The Wii and DS releases are that battle-chess idea. They are not a new ruleset; they are a costume on the old grid.
