John Tanner's coma is the reason a driver can change bodies in Driver San Francisco. Ubisoft Reflections built the 2011 game around Shift, a power that jumps the player from car to car across an open city.
A chase that is going badly can be saved by shifting into the car ahead and moving it out of the way. The story treats the shift as a dying detective's vision of San Francisco, with Jericho as the man Tanner is trying to stop.
Earlier Driver games were about one car and a getaway. Shift makes the whole traffic jam a set of vehicles the player might become before the corner.
