History

Periscope hunts and torpedo solutions fill Silent Service, the World War II submarine simulation Sid Meier designed for MicroProse. Convoys, depth charges, and a limited spread of torpedoes are the problems, on home computers in the mid-1980s.

Meier's design asks for patience under the waves rather than a fast arcade pattern. The map and the periscope are the two views a patrol lives in.

The NES cartridge is a later port, not the original release. MicroProse's computer submarine, and Meier's name on it, are the simulation the cart is adapting.
