Huang Lee arrives in Liberty City with a stolen sword in Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars. Rockstar Leeds' 2009 top-down DS original was praised far above a typical handheld spinoff.
Drug deals, scratch-card minigames, and a top-down camera tell a crime story built for the stylus rather than a console import. The tone and the mission writing are why it stood apart from throwaway handheld tie-ins.
Liberty City here is a DS map with its own Triad plot, not a cropped edition of an earlier 3D entry. The praise followed that original handheld design.
