The web-series host becomes the avatar of a deliberately harsh throwback, and Angry Video Game Nerd Adventures puts that nerd through cheap deaths. A fake block over a pit is the kind of death the nerd would pause the review to yell about.
Pit spikes, fake blocks, and a limited continue supply mock the cartridges he reviews. A beer-powered shot and a sidekick pickup are the tools, and they do not stop the next gag death.
Cheap deaths and the nerd's continue count reached both the successor console and the glasses-free handheld in 2013 with the beer shot still equipped. Surviving a stage means recognizing a cruel pattern the show would have yelled about.
