History

Doug Smith wrote the gold-collecting puzzle Lode Runner (1983), and Broderbund's computer release made the diggable brick a hit. Guards follow the thief through holes he digs, and every bar of gold has to be cleared.

The design predates any Nintendo port. Computer players already knew the trap-the-guard rhythm before a console board existed.

Broderbund's release is the hit this title refers to. Hudson's later Famicom life of the puzzle is a descendant, and Smith's computer game is the earlier chase.
