History

Michel Ocelot's French animated film licensed Kirikou, a Game Boy Color release from 2001 aimed at European players. It is a cartoon adaptation, not a Nintendo adventure.

The small hero of that West African story is the lead, and the cartridge speaks to audiences who already knew the film. European shelves are where this box was meant to sit.

Nothing about the village tale comes from a Mario or Zelda template. The film is the source, and the handheld is one adaptation of it.
