Probe built Forsaken as a six-degrees-of-freedom shooter in the vein of Descent, and Acclaim published it in 1998 already. A craft pitches, rolls, and slides through tunnels, with no floor that can be called down for long.
The Nintendo 64 version is a home port of that PC and PlayStation design. Doors, reactor cores, and a hostile security system structure the floors, and the hover is the skill.
Descent is the ancestor of the free rotation, not a level pack inside this box. Forsaken's tunnels and Acclaim's port are the Nintendo 64 way into that weightless gunfight.
