History

The octagon, not a temple, is the ring in Ultimate Fighting Championship. An early licensed fighting game from 2000 borrows the mixed-martial-arts promotion, so strikes and takedowns share one ruleset instead of a fireball contest.

Grappling on the mat and a stand-up exchange are both legal, which is the promotion's whole identity. A health bar still ends the bout, but the moves are elbows, shoots, and a cage rather than a cartoon special.

Later UFC games grew a larger roster and a heavier presentation. This early license is the one that first put the promotion's cage into a fighting game.
