History

Olive Oyl tosses tokens down to the sailor in Nintendo's Popeye, while Bluto patrols the platforms. Spinach is a short power-up that lets Popeye punch the bully instead of fleeing him.

The 1982 arcade license is a single-screen chase: hearts and letters have to be caught before they hit the water. Miss too many gifts, or let Bluto land a grab, and the round is over.

An NES port of that coin-op is real, and a Game Boy edition followed the same license. Both still turn on spinach, Olive's falling gifts, and Bluto's reach.
