History

Susumu Hori's air meter is the real opponent in Mr. Driller, Namco's 2000 descent through colored blocks. Drill a connected group of the same color and it vanishes; drill carelessly and the shaft above collapses onto the little driller.

Pockets of air refill the meter, which is always draining. The deeper the hole, the stranger the color patterns, and a missed capsule ends the run faster than any monster would.

Taizo's son, heir to a digging legacy, is a puzzle character rather than an explorer with a map. That release made the single-screen panic a series: color, oxygen, and the next block down.
