Wolves, cold, and an empty cupboard are the antagonists in The Long Dark. Hinterland's Canadian wilderness survival game entered early access in 2014, with its story mode, Wintermute, arriving later.
Will Mackenzie and Dr. Astrid Greenwood carry that story across Great Bear, while a separate survival sandbox drops a player into the weather with no plot at all. Matches, a hatchet, and a cave are worth more than a gunshot that attracts everything nearby.
